Dodgeball Rules:

-
There are 3 groupings for play, 6th-8th grade, 9th-12th grade, and >18 years old. Based on the number of team registrations for each category, there will be round robin play followed by bracket elimination. 6th-8th grade and 9th-12th grade bracket will be SINGLE ‘or’ DOUBLE elimination. >18 years old bracket will be DOUBLE elimination.
-
There are no minimum # of players required for a team. The maximum # of players on a team is 8, HOWEVER, The maximum # of males on a team cannot exceed 6. A team of 8 must consist of at least 2 females, and the rest can be males. This rule does not apply if the team is entirely females (can have 2-8 females).

-
Food and beverages are to be kept OUTSIDE OF THE GYMNASIUM.
Game Play Rules:
The Start:
-
Games start when the official counts 3, 2, 1, dodgeball. Players cannot leave their end lines until dodgeball is announced. At least one part of a player must be touching the end line or they are declared out before the game starts.
-
There are 6 dodgeballs laid out on the mid-court line. At the start, ANY dodgeball can be picked up by ANY player. NOTE: At the start, all dodgeballs must be brought back to the teams end line before they can be thrown at the opposing team. Players hit with a dodgeball before it has been brought back to the end line (start only) will not be out.
Eliminating a player:
-
A player is eliminated when any of the following happen:
-
A dodgeball is thrown and hits an opponent (and is not caught) before it comes into contact with a wall, barrier, ground, or another dodgeball. If the dodgeball hits one of these objects first and then hits a player, that player is not out. If the dodgeball strikes a player and then hits the ground, wall, another dodgeball, or a barrier and then is caught by any player, the player struck is still out, and the player who threw the dodgeball is not out.
** Exceptions to this rule
-
Players struck above the shoulders are NOT out, as long as that player is standing up. Any players intentionally trying to harm someone by throwing at their head will be subject to game disqualification, or event disqualification. The decision on this is left up to the game referee.
-
If the dodgeball is thrown at an opponent and they try to block it with a dodgeball and they lose control of their dodgeball and it hits the ground, they are out. See Ex4.
Ex1- Player A throws a ball and hits Player B in the chest. The ball ricochets off player B and hits the wall. The ball bounces back and is caught by Player B. Player B is out and play commences.
Ex2- Player A throws a ball and hits Player B in the chest. The ball ricochets off Player B and is caught by Player C (On Player B’s team). Player A is out, and a member of Player B/C’s team can come back into the game.
Ex3- Player A throws a ball at Player B. The ball strikes the ground and then hits Player B’s leg. Neither Player A nor Player B are out.
Ex4- Player A throws a ball at Player B. Player B deflects the thrown ball with a ball they are holding. In the process, the thrown ball knocks the ball out of Player B’s hands and both dodgeballs hit the ground. Player B is out. If Player B maintains control of the ball they had before it hits the ground, Player B is not out.
-
A player crosses the mid-line of the playing court. Whether intentional or not, a player crossing the mid-line will be automatically eliminated. If a ball was thrown and the players action caused them to cross the line, anyone hit by that wall will not be out.
-
In addition to this rule, if a player crosses the mid-line and is ‘out’, the entire opposing team is eligible to re-enter the game.
Player Re-Entry:
-
A Player who is out is eligible to re-enter the game when the following happens:
-
The game is over and another game starts
-
If a teammate catches a thrown ball and the opposing player is out
-
Note: The order in which players were eliminated dictates the order they can return to play- The player who has been out the longest is the next to enter. Players can’t choose who re-enters the game.
-
If an opposing player crosses the mid-line all players are eligible to re-enter the game, and the opposing player is out
-
There are no ‘double hits’- when a player is out and is hit again before they leave the court, thereby allowing another player to enter
Sudden Death:
-
Game length will be set at the tournament and the following addresses rules if game length is exceeded and there is no winner:
-
Once the game length has been reached the game official will announce that game length has been reached and will announce SUDDEN DEATH.
-
When sudden death is announced no players are eligible to re-enter the game until the game is over.
-
The entire court becomes in play- the mid-line is no longer in effect.
-
Players are still subject to the rules of being out as listed above, with the exception that players can’t re-enter the game.
ANY DISAGREEMENTS OR DISCUSSIONS SHALL BE ADRESSED BETWEEN THE GAME REFEREES AND TEAM CAPTAINS.
BELOW IS A TEAM REGISTRATION SHEET FOR ALL YOUR PLAYERS.
